History[edit | edit source]
Interchange Square was announced in June 1985, developed by Sutton Properties with an early 1986 opening date.[1] Consolidated Foods was originally announced as the anchor, along with Revco Drugs, but was later replaced by an independent grocery store, Gregg's Fine Foods.[2] Other opening day businesses included Just Video, Pizza King, Sun Brite Cleaners, Style With Flair, and Palm Bay Florist.[3] The center held it's grand opening on August 1-3, 1986, in a grand opening celebration featuring clowns, a show off the Harbor City Volunteer Ambulance Squad's vehicles, a street dance, a skydiving exhibition, a fashion show, and a performance by the Ramblin' Rebel Cloggers.[4] In 1992, a slot car racing business called Fastrax opened in the plaza.[5] Dollar General had opened in the former Revco space by 1995.[6]
The plaza grew with the paving of nearby Malabar Road in 1998. By 1998, Big Lots and Bealls Outlet had announced they were moving into the spot vacated by Gregg's Fine Foods, which had previously closed.[7] Other businesses, including Garden Fresh Produce and Joan's Chicago Style Pizza also moved into the plaza at this time.[8] By 2015, when Goodwill moved into a portion of the anchor building, both Big Lots and Bealls Outlet had closed.[9]
