Xpect Discounts

From Retailpedia
This Xpect Discounts in Cromwell, Connecticut was a former Kmart Foods. It closed with the chain in 2016 and is now a ShopRite.

Xpect Discounts was a chain of discount drug and grocery stores operated by Marc's from 1979 until 2016. At its peak, the chain had seven stores in Connecticut and Massachusetts.

History[edit | edit source]

Xpect Discounts was founded by Marc Glassman in 1979 as a discount drug store. Glassman was a former employee of Bernie Shulman's, a discount drug store in Cleveland, Ohio.[1] He eventually opened his own chain of stores, Marc's.

Originally exclusively a drug store, Xpect eventually added groceries, health and beauty aids, and other general merchandise. The chain had four locations in Connecticut and Massachusetts as of 1994.[2]

Xpect began to struggle during the 2008 recession. As of the early 2010's, the chain had seven stores, all in Connecticut. The location in Derby closed in April 2012.[3] North Haven's Xpect Discounts was then shuttered in July 2013.[4] The last individual store to close was the Newtown Road store in Danbury, which shut down in March 2015, leaving the chain with four stores.[5]

On February 19, 2015, it was announced that Marc's would be leaving the state of Connecticut and the remaining Xpect Discounts locations would close.[6] The remaining three stores, in Milford, Cromwell, and East Haven, shut down on April 1, 2016.[7] As of January 2023, the Milford store is now Colonial Toyota, the Cromwell store is a ShopRite, and the East Haven store is a Big Lots.
